As of August 2000 there were 21 Indian casinos operating in Washington and one new casino was expected to open by early 2001. Fourteen of the state's casinos are affiliated with tribes that have compacts with the state that allow them to offer table games, as well as a special kind of gaming machine that is similar to a slot machine. These gaming machines all have video screens and aren't allowed to accept cash. Instead, a cashless system is used whereby you have to go to a cashier cage, or a kiosk, and buy a smart card which then deducts losses, or credits wins to your account.
Of the state's remaining eight casinos, four are affiliated with the Spokane Tribe, three are operated by the Colville Confederated Tribes and one is affiliated with the Shoalwater Tribe. All of these Tribes have an ongoing dispute with the state and are operating without compacts. All eight of their casinos offer regular slot machines as well as table games. Unless otherwise noted, all casinos are open 24 hours and offer: blackjack, craps, roulette and pull tabs. Optional games offered include: baccarat (B), mini-baccarat (MB), poker (P), pai gow poker (PGP), Caribbean stud poker (CSP), big 6 wheel (B6), keno (K) and bingo (BG). The minimum gambling age is 18 (21 if liquor is served).
Although most of the casinos have toll-free numbers be aware that some of those numbers will only work for calls made within Washington. For more information on visiting Washington call the state's tourism department at (800) 544-1800.
