2.DOUBLE AND TRIPLE ODDS
Some casinos offer free double odds. This means that your odds bet can be twice as large as your line bet. This can be very profitable to the player if he knows how to use it. Let's again take the example of the player who is used to making ten-dollar pass-line bets. If he plays at a casino that gives double odds, his wisest course will be to bet three dollars on the line, then take six dollars on the odds whenever the shooter rolls a point on the come-out. This will give him nine dollars of action, almost exactly the same amount he usually wagers. However, because two-thirds of the bet is paid off at true odds, the house advantage on the nine dollars is only .
6 percent, compared with a .8 percent edge on the ten dollars if he bets five on the line and five behind the line (single odds) or a 1.4 percent edge if he bets all ten dollars on the pass line. Double odds are offered in a few Las Vegas Strip casinos, most downtown Las Vegas casinos, and most of the casinos in Reno. There are a few casinos that even offer triple odds; you free odds bet can be three times as large as your line bet. Our ten-dollar line bettor could now bet three dollars on the line and nine on the odds. Note that in each case, he would want to keep the sum of the line and odds bets at about that ten-dollar range to get the full benefit of the fact that the odds bet is paid off at correct odds. Many writers on gambling seem to miss this point. They simply advise crap players to make as large an odds bet as the house will allow in proportion to their line bet. This alone accomplishes nothing. A bettor making ten-dollar line bets and taking free double odds will lose his money just as fast as another player making ten-dollar line bets who takes no odds. They are both paying 1.4 percent of ten dollars on each bet.
But a third player who bets five dollars on the line and five on the odds can make his money last almost twice as long as either of the first two bettors because half of his ten dollars is riding free. Don't make the mistake of betting more money than you had planned to of the odds. Your goal is not to bet as much as possible on the odds but rather to decide how much you want to wager, then figure how to get as large a portion of that total sum behind the line. That is why it is worth the serious crap bettor's while to seek out double-or triple-odds games. With double and triple odds, you may again be allowed to bet slightly more in order to permit a round payoff. The rule is that you can bet double or triple what would normally be allowed in a single-odds game. Most casinos that permit double or triple odds will post that fact on the plaque that lists the table limits. However, if you are unsure, feel free to ask the dealer. see more > > >
