2.PRESSING AND TAKING DOWN BETS
As soon as you understand the different ways the various numbers can be made, you will be able to analyze why the casino does many of the things it does at craps. For example, a player making a don't-pass or don't-come bet is allowed to rescind his wager at any time after the first roll if he wishes. If you were to bet twenty-five dollars on the don't-pass line and the shooter rolled a 4 on the come-out, if you have second thoughts about the bet you can ask the dealer to return the money to you at any time, as long the shooter has not yet rolled a 7 or repeated his point. This is known as calling down or taking down your bet. Alternatively, you can ask him to return just part of the bet. The same is true of don't-come bets. In fact, every wager at craps can be called down by the player before a decision has been reached, except for the pass and come bets. This double standard on the part of the house seems illogical and capricious until you study the odds.
When the shooter starts to roll, he has eight ways in which he may win on the first roll by throwing a natural. These are the six ways in which 7 can be made and the two ways 11 can be made. By contrast, he has only four ways he may lose on the first roll, the two ways of rolling a 3, plus the one way of rolling a 2 and the one way or rolling a 12. This means that if the bet should be decided on the first roll, the odds are 2 to 1 that it will go in favor of the right bettor.
However, the situation radically changes after the first roll. If the shooter has rolled a point on the come-out, the odds immediately shift against him. In order to win, he must throw the same number again before rolling a 7. But since there are more ways of making 7 than any other number, the odds are against the shooter making his point, no matter what that point might be. The casino now has the bettor where it wants him, and it is not about to let him wriggle out of it by taking back his money. If the casino allowed right bettors to rescind their bets at any time, smart gamblers would take down their bets immediately after the first roll.
They would have 2 to 1 odds going for them on every come-out and, if the shooter didn't roll a natural or craps, they would take back their bets and wit until the next come-out. Insisting that the do bettor's wager remain in play until a decision is reached is the only way the casino can get a real shot at the money. And they will be only too happy to allow the bettor to press his pass-line or come bet-add more money to it - after the come-out roll whey the odds are strongly against him. For the same reason, the casino will allow a player to make a pass-line bet after the come-out roll. At that point, he is getting by far the worst of it. However, with the wrong bettor, the situation is just the opposite.
Suppose the shooter's point is 4. There are 6 ways of rolling a 7, but only 3 ways of rolling a 4. This means that the odds are 6 to 3- or 2 to 1- in favor of the don't-pass bettor. The odds will be in his favor whatever the point number may be. The only reason the casinos are willing to accept don't-pass bets in the first place is that they have such a good shot at winning them on the come-out roll. The odds on the roll are 8 to 3 against him. Remember, the house bars 12, so the only numbers the don't-pass bettor has going for him on the come-out are 2 and 3. Whenever the don't-pass bettor is lucky enough to survive the come-out roll, the odds shift in his favor. The casino is now the underdog. Naturally, if the player is willing to take back his bet at his point, the casino will be relieved to let him do it. He will be letting the house off the hook.
They will also let him call the bet off for a particular roll. In other words, the bettor can instruct the dealer that the bet should not count for the next roll. In that case, the dealer will mark the bet by placing a small button on it that says off. What they will not let him do is press the bet now that he has the upper hand. To summarize, the house will let you press your pass-line and come bets and make late pass-line, none of which you should ever do. They will let you call down or reduce your don't-pass and don't-come bets, but not increase them. They will allow you to either press or call down any other wagers on the layout. see more > > > Refinements
