1.THE DON'T-PASS BET
One of the appealing things about casino craps is that you can bet either with the shooter or against him. When wagering against the shooter you are, in effect, betting with the house. When they win, you win. To bet against the shooter, you would make a don't-pass bet. It would seem that the casino could not allow players to bet both with and against the shooter without giving the edge to one or the other group of bettors. After all, if the odds are against the pass bettor, they must be in favor of the don't-pass bettor.
On the other hand, if the odds are against the don't-pass bettor, they must favor the pass bettor. One way or the other, somebody must be getting and advantage over the house. As a matter of fact, the odds are slightly against the shooter. We have already seen that when a player makes a pass-line bet, the house enjoys a 1.414 percent edge. However, the casino is not about to hand over that 1.414 percent advantage to the don't-pass bettor. If it did, it would be in the charity business, operating the game as a public service. The reason the house allows players to make don't-pass bets is that it has an ingenious trick up its sleeve. You will see it printed on the line where don't-pass bets are made. It is in the form of the word BAR, followed by a picture of two dice showing 6-6. This means that when the shooter rolls a 12 crap on the come-out, the pass bettor loses, but the don't-pass bettor does not win. It is considered a standoff. The wrong bettor does not lose his bet; the bet simply remains on the line, to be decided by the next series of rolls. In other words, for the don't-pass bettor, when a 6-6 is rolled, it is as if the roll had never occurred.
Since the bettor does not actually lose his bet on the 12-crap roll, many players find it difficult to understand why the bar 6-6 gives the house an edge. Remember what we learned in Chapter II: The casino makes its profit when you win a bet, not when you lose. It does so by putting part of your winnings in its own packet. In this case, it goes further. If you're betting against the shooter, when 6-6 comes up you should win, but the casino puts all your winnings in its pocket. Even though your original bet remains untouched, you've just lost some money. The result of this maneuver is that instead of reaping the benefit of the 1.414 percent edge against the shooter, the wrong bettor now suffers a 1.402 percent disadvantage himself.
This Machiavellian maneuver allows the house to book both right bets and wrong bets and enjoy an almost identical advantage on both sets of bets. (You will occasionally see a book cite the house edge on wrong bets as 1.38 percent. This difference is only a matter of definition. Some mathematicians count rolls of 6-6, not a decision on the don't-pass bet, but only as a delay in the action. Calculated this way, the house edge comes up a very slightly different figure.) Although all the casinos in Las Vegas and Atlantic City bar 6-6, those in northern Nevada bar 1-1 and pay off on 6-6. This does not change anything, since 2 crap is rolled exactly as often as 12 crap. However, beware of any casino crap game where the layout says BAR 1-2. In such a game, the odds are twice as high against you, since 3 crap is rolled twice as often as either 2 crap or 12 crap. (See the discussion of odds below). You will occasionally encounter such a layout in Las Vegas night charity games and some illegal underground games. Any such game is for suckers only.
To make a don't pass bet, place your wager in front of you on the don't-pass line. This is the strip marked DON'T PASS that parallels the pass line along the outer border of the layout. Because of the position of the don't-pass line on the layout, these wagers are also called back-line bets. The time to make a don't-pass bet is immediately before the come-out. Don't-pass bets are paid at even money. If you win, the dealer will place your payoff on the don't-pass line next to your original bet. You must collect this money before the next roll, or it will count as a new don't-pass bet. see more > > >
