5.PROTECTING YOUR BETS
Misplaced Bets It is your responsibility at the crap table to protect your money at all times. This means understanding the layout well enough to make sure that when you put down a bet, it is actually the kind of wager you intend to make. It also means watching the dealer to make sure that he does not make a mistake in placing your bets.
The rule at craps is that "the bet plays as it lays. " This means that a wager will always count as what it is on the layout, and not necessarily as what you wanted it to be-even if the error was the dealer's fault. If a dealer makes a mistake in positioning your bet, you must point out the error before the next roll of the dice; otherwise the bet will count as he made it.
You will note with experience that in placing each bet in the proper box, the dealer positions it in relation to the bettor's location at the table. This makes it possible for him to keep track of what bet belongs to which player. It also makes it easier for you to keep track of your bets. If you follow a consistent pattern in your betting, the dealer will pick up on this pattern before long. He will know that you always take the free odds, or that you want your bets working on the come-out, or that you always take down a place bet after a win. He will then be able to handle your bets correctly with a minimum of instruction from you. However, if you decide to change your betting pattern suddenly, you must be sure to make this clear to him.
Winnings. It is also your job to get your money off the layout when you are paid. Otherwise, it may count as a bet you didn't want to make. For example, come bets are paid off in the come box. If you don't collect your winnings before the next roll, they become a new come bet. Sleeper Bets. Another danger to your bankroll is the claim bet artist. A player with a large number of bets working at the same time can easily lose track of some of them, particularly at a crowded table.
Sometimes he will win a wager without even realizing it and leave the winnings unclaimed on the layout. Crap dealers are familiar with this phenomenon and call them sleeper bets. Sometimes a dealer will notice what has happened and call your attention to your forgotten bet, but you can't count on this. Small-time cheats are constantly on the lookout for this situation and will move in to collect unclaimed bets as their own. If caught, they brush the incident off as an accident. Some crooks will go so far as to steal a few of a player's chips directly from the rail as he is playing. Players can become so caught up in the game and so engrossed in watching the dice, particularly on a hot roll, that such thievery becomes child's play. If you are not alert against such scams, you can end up a loser even after a winning session of play.
