8.THE BEST WAY TO COVER THE NUMBERS
As you can see by comparing the various house percentages on the place bets to the 4.7 percent edge on buy bets, it may be less costly for you to place the bet or buy it depending on the number you are betting. Numbers 5, 6, 8, and 9 are better placed than bought. Numbers 4 and 10 are cheaper if bought, as long as you can afford to make a twenty-unit bet rather than the five-unit minimum bet required to place the bet.
You don't really have to remember all that. The house edge on 4, 5, 9, and 10 is so high, whether you place or buy, that the matter is only of theoretical interest. The percentage is simply too high to buck. I strongly advise you to avoid both place and buy bets on all numbers except 6 and 8. In these two cases, the house edge of 1.5 percent is almost identical to the 1.4 percent you face on line bets, making this a reasonable wager.
However, there is still a better approach. The smart bettor achieves essentially the same result as the place or buy bettor at a fraction of the cost by exploiting the come line. When you make a come bet, if the shooter rolls a number-as opposed to craps or a natural-you will have that number covered for a repeat. If the table is hot, with many numbers being rolled and few 7s, you will soon have most of the numbers covered and at only a 1.4 percent edge, which is better than any place or buy bet can offer. More important, when you make a come bet, you can also take free odds on the come point, which cuts the percentage against you still further, to only. 8 percent. Some crap players reject this argument by saying that a number only has to come up once to win if the number was placed or bought but must come up twice before a come bet will win. This reasoning would make sense if you really had some way of knowing that a particular number was going to be rolled soon. Of course, place and buy bettors don't have any such knowledge.
They are merely hoping that the shooter will hold on to the dice for a long time. If that should prove to be the case, you will make more money with come bets and odds than with place or buy bets. Keep in mind that it is no more difficult to win the come bet than a place or buy bet, because you are not betting that a number will come up twice. You are only betting that it will come up once after it has already come up on the first roll. The conclusive argument is simply that the P. C. on a come bet is far lower than that on place or buy bets. Remember, the casino places all its faith on the percentages, and that strategy certainly seems to have paid off for them.
I suggest you do the same. When the come bet was first introduced to casino craps, many of the smart-money gamblers predicted that place and buy bets would soon become obsolete. But they reckoned without that breed of animal of which there is one born every minute. see more > > >
