5.COVERING THE NUMBERS
We have already seen that the smartest bets at craps are the line bets combined with full odds. However, many players want to get as much action as possible, particularly when they feel the table is hot. They want t win whenever the shooter rolls any of the box numbers (4,5,6,8,9 or 10) rather than just when he succeeds in repeating his point. To accomplish this, they bet on some or all of these numbers individually so that every time any of they have covered is rolled before a 7, they win. Of course, if the shooter rolls a 7, all of these bets will lose. The two wagers usually used to accomplish this are place bets and buy bets.
Because place bets, buy bets, and come bets are all wagers used primarily by pass-line bettors as a means of getting more money riding on the shooter, both place and buy bets, like come odds bets, are always off on the come-out; the come-out roll does not count in determining the outcome of these wagers. If the place bets were working on all rolls, it would mean that, if a 7 were rolled on the come-out, the bettor would win his line bet but lose his place or buy bets. Actually, this would have no long-run effect on his chances of showing a profit. If does, however, create an emotional conflict for the bettor. He wants a 7 on the come-out so he will win his pass-line bet, but he doesn't want a 7 so he won't lose his place or buy bets. Having the place and buy bets off on the come-out helps keep the bettors from getting schizoid. However, if a player wishes, he can inform the dealer that he wants his bets working on the come-out. In such a case, the dealer will mark the bet either by placing a small button on it that bears the word ON or by placing the dice buck on the bet.
Admittedly, come bettors will still face this paradoxical situation on come-out rolls. If a 7 appears, they win their pass-line bet but lose any come bets they had up. We have already seen that the house never allows pass-line or come bets to be called off after the first roll where it has the advantage. However, if softens the blow for the come bettor by counting the odds part of the bet off on the come-out unless the player requests otherwise. see more > > >
