The Straight-Up Bet. This is a wager that one of the thirty-eight possible numbers on the wheel will come up on the next spin. It pays 35 to 1. The Split Bet. This is a wager that either of two numbers will come up on the next spin. If pays 17 to 1. This bet is made by placing one's chips on the line separating any two adjoining numbers. In the layout illustration, B is a wager that either 8 or 9 will win. Zero and double zero can also be wagered as a split bet. This is the only wager that can be made at two completely different points on the layout. It can be bet by placing one's chips so they overlap the two numbers. However, as a convenience to players who are sitting too far to reach that point, it can also be wagered by placing one's chips on the line separating the second twelve box form the third twelve box. In the layout illustration, the two bets marked C are both split bets on 0 and 00.
The Street Bet. This is wager that one of three numbers will come up on the next spin. It pays 11 to 1. This bet is made by placing one's chips on the outside border of the numbers at the end of the row of three numbers one wishes to bet on. In the layout illustration, D represents a bet that either 13, 14, or 15 will win. There are three different three-number bets that include 0 and/or 00. These are the bets on 0-1-2, on 0-00-2, and 00-2-3. These wagers are made by placing one's chips so they overlap all three desired numbers. In layout illustration, E represents a wager on numbers 0, 00, and 2.
The Corner Bet. This is a wager that any of four numbers will come up on the next spin. The bet pays 8 to 1. One may only make a corner bet on four numbers that are in a square formation. For that reason the wager is also called a square bet. It is also known as a quarter bet. The bet is made by placing one's chips at the point where the corners of all four numbers meet. In the layout illustration, F represents a wager that either 17, 18, 20, or 21 will win.
The Five-Number Bet. Also known as the house special, this wager is unique in roulette for two reasons. First, there is only one five-number bet that can be made. This is a wager on 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3. The second reason why the five-number bet is unique is that it is the worst wager in the game. Unlike all other roulette bets that face an identical house percentage, the five-number bet, with its 6 to 1 payoff, give the house an edge that is fifty percent higher. The five0number bet is made by placing one's chips at the corner where the line separating the 0 from the number 3 meets the outer border of the numbered section of the layout. In the illustration, G is a wager on the house special. However, this is one roulette wager that should never be made by a knowledgeable player.
The line Bet. This is a wager that one of six different numbers will come up on the next spin. It pays 5 to 1. This bet is made by placing one's chips on the outside border of the numbers at the point where it is intercepted by one of the lines separating two rows of numbers. These two rows of three numbers each are the numbers on which the player is betting. In the layout illustration, H represents a wager that either 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, or 30 will win.
OUTSIDE BETS
The Column Bet. This is a wager that one of the twelve numbers the player is betting on will come up on the next spin. It pays 2 to 1. There are three different columns the player may bet on. The bet is made by placing one's chips in the box marked 2 to 1 at the base of the column one wishes to bet on. In the layout illustration, 1 is a wager on the middle column. It will win if any of the following numbers comes up: 2,5,8,11,14,17,20,23,26,29,32, or 35. Numbers 0 and 00 are not considered part of the three columns.
The Dozen Bet. This is a wager that one of twelve consecutive numbers will come up on the next spin. Like the column bet, it also pays 2 to 1. There are three different dozen bets one may make: numbers 1 to 12, called the first twelve; numbers 13 to 24, called the second twelve; and numbers 25 to 36, called the third twelve. The bet is made by placing one's chips in the box at the side of the layout that parallels the twelve numbers one wishes to bet on. In the layout illustration, J is a wager that any one of the numbers 25 to 36 will win.
Red and Black Bets. This is a wager that a number of a particular color, either red or black, will win. The bet pays even money. It is made by placing one's chips in the box at the side of the layout that is marked with the appropriate color. In the layout illustration, K is wager that the winning number will be a red one. The red or black bet is one of three wagers at roulette that pays even money. Because each of these even-money bets loses if either of the green numbers (0 and 00) comes up, they each give the player eighteen ways to win and twenty ways to lose. The Atlantic City casinos offer a feature on the even-money bets that cuts the players' losses in half. This will be discussed in the next section under the heading En Prison.
Odd and Even Bets. This is a wager that one of the eighteen odd numbers (or one of the eighteen even numbers) will come up on the next spin. This bet also pays even money. The wager is made by placing one's chips in the appropriately marked box at the side of the layout. In the layout illustration, L is a bet that the winning number will be an even one. 1 to 18 and 19 to 36 Bets. This is a wager that one of the eighteen low numbers (or one of the eighteen high numbers) will come up on the next spin. It is the last of the three even-money bets at roulette. The wager is made by placing one's chips in the appropriately marked box at the side of the layout at either end. In the layout illustration, M is a bet that the winning number will number will be high one (from 19 to 36).
