Black Future Month // 2-15-11 // Queen GodIs, Siren
Posted on February 15, 2011
I’ve been trying to write about my friend Queen GodIs for an hour, now. I’m positive that I won’t be able to do it justice. At this point I just want to show you a few videos and let you make the obvious connection. One woman is of the most gifted and giving women I know — The other’s music has enveloped for as long as I can recall — and reminds me that I can be born again. But I’ll start with the younger of the two, since that is our format and I wanna give you your money’s worth. I’ll do my best to avoid writing incantations and praise prose. I’ll just tell you about Queen.
I can’t help but to make this next comparison since the two favor each other so. Perhaps the method Syreeta Wright used to find her true voice is the same one that Queen uses now. And maybe it manifests as bone structure and skin tone? Maybe that’s why we can’t help but to watch, mouth agape. Maybe that’s why Billy Preston and Stevie Wonder were moths to the flame of Syreeta’s voice.
Here’s Syreeta looking all Queen-like, with a rare studio recording of Harmour Love.
Here she is again after a performance on American Bandstand. Dick Clark gets the Thickwit Affirmative Action treatment only cause I want you to be able to peep Syreeta’s demeanor.
Thickwit recognizes that #blackfuture is regal. A la Queen GodIs and Syreeta Wright.
