Black Future Month // 2-20-11 // Joshua Mays, Muralist

Posted on February 20, 2011

I first peeped Joshua Mays’ work just a few weeks back as I visited Pueblo Nuevo Gallery in Berkeley.
Proprietor of the place, Miguel “Bounce” Perez, put me on to the Denver Born, Philadelphia based muralist. I was only home for a few days and missed his gallery show.

I’m hesitant to write about visual art since I can’t ever do it justice. I would like to say that I appreciate the contrast between the organic and the geometric, the easy blend between the fact of science and the emotion of improvisation. I wanna say that I feel a little bit at home when faced by the large scale of his art; feel like I could fall deep inside. But that seems a little overkill to be taken seriously, even though it is true. Instead, I present this timelapse put together by TYS just before the winter show. Thickwit honors the talent and scale or Joshua May’s genius. Check for him at

We’re gonna balance it out with a work by Romare Bearden, frequently noted but oft under studied, here’s an historic mural installed in 1988 in the great city of Pittsburgh, PA — not too far from Joshua May’s stomping ground. Click the image to see the full photo.

Thickwit honors the #blackfuture of black art made possible by Romare Bearden and pushed ever forward by Joshua Mays.

Great post thank you for the love! Joshua’s mural and presence at Pueblo has been a blessing. The one thing about the post is TYS is NOT a Pueblo venture at all. Its a Miguel Perez & Plinio Hernandez with mad help from Diana Negrin and our current intern Nisha Sembi….

Thanks for the clarification, fam. Sorry for the shoddy journalism. Much respect to Plinio and Diana and to your new intern, who I can’t wait to meet. Fixed in the new version of the post.

And, much love to the TYS fam, too.
